Up-to-date news on the realignment

The following are trainings offered as home study or on-line options:

BASIC LEADERSHIP TRAINING- HOME STUDY OPTION TROOP MANAGEMENT, DAISY, BROWNIE, AND JUNIOR AGE LEVELS NOW AVAILABLE


A home study option for the Troop Management and Daisy, Brownie, and Junior Age Level modules of Basic Leadership Training are available for those who are unable to attend scheduled training or would prefer the convenience of training at home.

After you have completed your orientation, you may register for the Home-Study Option. These courses are self-directed trainings, which will help you to understand troop management issues and age level program. In addition to the home study booklet(s), you will receive the name and phone number of a home-study coach who will be able to answer questions on topics covered in this session. You can feel free to call your coach as you work through the material in this course. To complete the home study courses, you will need your orientation manual, a copy of Safety Wise, the leader's guide and handbooks for the age level with which you will be working.

In order to receive credit for participating in this course, you must return completed paperwork to your coach when you have finished the training.

For those participating in the Troop Management home study, Safety Wise and a supplementary video entitled Girl Scouting: Your Gift to Girls are available on loan from the council office. The video features real-life scenes of girls and adults demonstrating the unique concepts and foundations of Girl Scouting. You may use the materials for 30 days. Call Debbie Nawara, Volunteer Services Manager at 312-416-2500 ext 212 to make arrangements to pick up loaned materials.

For those participating in the Age Level Home Study, Age Level Handbooks and Leaders Guides and a supplementary video are available on loan from the council office. To register, complete the home study registration form in the Training Schedule and mail/ fax it in to the Council Office, or call the Events Registrar at 312/416-2500 ext 211

PLANNING, PROGRESSION AND PAPERWORK TRAINING- HOME STUDY OPTION

A home study option for the Planning, Progression and Paperwork Training module of Basic Outdoor Training is now available for those who are unable to attend scheduled training or would prefer the convenience of training at home.

Anytime after you have completed New Leader Orientation, you may register for the Home-Study Option. This course is a self-directed training, which will help you to understand progression in outdoor skills, girl readiness for camping, the pre-camp planning process, including budgeting, menu planning and shopping, safety, dressing for the weather, necessary permissions and paperwork essential for a successful camping trip.

In addition to the home study booklet(s), you will receive the name and phone number of a home-study coach who will be able to answer questions on topics covered in this session. You can feel free to call your coach as you work through the material in this course. To complete the home study courses, you will need a copy of Safety Wise. In order to receive credit for participating in this course, you must return completed paperwork to your coach when you have finished the training.

BASIC LEADERSHIP TRAINING-TROOP MANAGEMENT - ON-LINE OPTION



This is an exciting development from GSUSA available to volunteers in Girl Scouts of Chicago. GSUSA is now offering a web-based training called Basic Orientation Module: Training for Adults Who Work with Girls. It covers basic information about Juliette Low, the Promise and Law, the Four Program Goals, girl/adult partnership, safety, and pluralism. These are only some of the topics covered in the Troop Management session of Basic Leadership Training.

In order to complete all sections of the Troop Management session, you will receive an abbreviated home study training packet. In order to receive credit for participating in this course, you must return completed paperwork to the council office when you have finished the training.

To register for on-line training please contact Sylvia Halbert, Volunteer Services Manager at shalbert@girlscoutsgcnwi.org. She will send you an e-mail reply with the technology requirements, the link to the training site and the special password you will need to enter the site. Be sure to include your home mailing address in order to receive the abbreviated home study materials that will complete your Troop Management Training.

LEADERS ON-LINE GROUP

Gschicago@yahoogroup.com is Internet group for Girl Scouts of Chicago volunteers who would like up-to-the-minute Girl Scout information, a place to network with others, and have a peer group to ask questions about Girl Scouting and receive answers via e-mail. You can join this group in one of two ways:
  • Go to the website www.yahoogroups.com and find the box marked search. Type in gschicago. It will take you to the gschicago@yahoogroups home page. In the right hand column, you will see the word join. Click on join and follow the directions to become a part of this group.
  • If you do not have internet access, but want to receive information from the list via e-mail, send an e-mail message to gschicago-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. In the body of the message type in the word: subscribe. Don't type anything after that.
  • After you have registered to join the list, you will get a message confirming your participation as a member of the gschicago mailing list. Once that message in received, you can send e-mail to the list, ask questions, share a story about you r troop, tell us about a fabulous field trip, or a terrific meeting idea, etc.

    A chat room is also available for informal get-togethers on your own as well as scheduled chats. Scheduled chats will be announced to members via the gschicago list.
