Step-by-Step Process for New Volunteers
- Recruitment: Volunteers come to Girl Scouts of Chicago through a wide
variety of sources. Prospective volunteers are recruited by current Girl Scout volunteers, by Girl Scout staff, or through one of several web pages.
- Orientation:
Prospective volunteers are given a brief orientation to Girl Scouting by a Girl Scout staff member or volunteer. Orientation meetings usually take 1-1/2 hours. Orientations are scheduled at various times and locations throughout the city. Check the Training Schedule for times and locations of group orientations or call your Membership Development Manager at 312-416-2500.
- Volunteer Service Application:
Each prospective volunteer fills out a Volunteer Service Application and three
reference forms .
- Interview:
Each prospective volunteer is interviewed, by phone or in person, by a Girl Scout staff member or volunteer. The purpose of the interview is to determine areas of interest, training needs, and other volunteer experience.
- Criminal Background Check:
A criminal background check is conducted on all prospective volunteers prior to placement in a volunteer assignment.
- Register:
Girl Scouting is a membership organization. All adult volunteers register as members of the Girl Scout movement by completing a registration form and submitting the $10 annual registration fee (subsidies are available). You may prefer to become a Lifetime member of Girl Scouting. Lifetime membership offers you an opportunity to belong to, and support, Girl Scouting. Lifetime membership dues are placed in a membership endowment fund that is used to support, develop, and extend Girl Scout membership to all girls. Lifetime dues are $250 (25 times the annual dues).
- Appointment to Position:
All volunteers are appointed for a one year term, running from October 1st through September 30th of each year. Volunteer positions are renewable annually.
- Training:
All volunteers are required to take training for their position within three months of appointment. Basic Leadership training is offered at a variety of convenient times and locations throughout the council. Check the Training Schedule for information about locations and registration procedures for training.
- On-Going Support:
Once placed in a volunteer assignment, volunteers are provided with on-going support from several sources. Troop leaders maintain close ties with the volunteer service unit coordinator, perhaps a troop organizer, and a Girl Scout staff member. Troop leaders are encouraged to attend the monthly service unit meetings, where they will have the opportunity to interact with other Girl Scout leaders, hear about council programs, and learn new skills.
